Serena Slammed

24 Jan

In a truly remarkable upset, Russia’s left handed Ekaterina Makarova triumphed over Serena Williams in straight sets on a blistering hot day at Rod LaverArena. Makarova – who has been more accustomed to being confused for an Italian pasta than a 1/4 finalist at Slams was really on the boil – you could say al-dente tennis from the world #56, winning 6/2 6/3.

Making this victory more improbable was Serena’s imposing 4 year unbeaten run at Melbourne Park. Serena at her post match press conference proclaimed her form as “horrendous” and that “I know I can play 100 times better than I did at this whole tournament”. She is a formidable competitor and will be back, but for how much longer and in what physical condition. Serena has become something of a part-time player on the WTA tour and will need to get back to a full(er) schedule to hold her ground against the challenges, particularly from the rising young Eastern bloc talent.

Makarova (the player, not the pasta) after putting away the loud “grunter” Serena now faces another test for her senses. In a battle of the Russians she will tackle the power hitting of Maria Sharapova in the 1/4 finals. Sharapova has taken shrieking during rallies to a new high (or low?) with the host broadcaster even putting a sidebar on the screen with a “shriek-o-meter” recording a decibel graph for Sharapova.  The Pro advises ear plugs for this one.
