Let’s go Lleyton, let’s go! – Australian Open 2012

25 Jan

Lleyton Hewitt – for so long the lone warrior for Australian tennis, at least on the men’s side of the ledger now has an ally in Bernard Tomic. Both are through to the next round, and both at seeming impossible odds to get this far – and lesser odds to proceed any further. Tomic plays Federer and Hewitt faces up against current ATP # 1 Novak Djokovic. But as we have already seen at this year’s Australian Open – funny things can and do happen on the tennis court.

Well that was last night and Tomic is out. His tournament coming to an end at the hands of the Fed express in full flight. But what a great tournament for Bernard Tomic. He has now a 3 to month period on the ATP tour with little to no points to defend from 2011. His ranking will surely rise, and we may well see him seeded at the next slam – the French Open.

And as for Lleyton, well we wait for the gladiator to hit the court tonight at Rod Laver Arena. He has the passion, the grit, the heart and the fight – but will that be enough against a resurgent Novak Djokovic. Hewitt is quite literally out on his feet – he has had major toe and foot surgery and realistically gave himself no chance of playing at the Open, let alone getting through to the second week of the event. In fact only 6 weeks ago in a practice session with good mate Peter Luczak, Hewitt quite literally could not move and Luczak had to play every ball back to a specific corner for Lleyton to get his timing and rhthym.

My tip Lleyton to battle with the usual grit and never say die attitude, but too come up short. Novak in 4 sets.

The PRO.
